  • Hear first-hand accounts from people who grew up in this area
  • Discover Belfast's political murals on foot
Full description

Venture beyond the guidebooks and explore Belfast through the political conflict known as The Troubles. Walk the streets on both sides of the Peace Line with men and women who were intimately involved as combatants in the period known as The Troubles.

Hear stories from both the Republican and Loyalist communities about the effects of the conflict, and get explanations about the political murals that tell the history and culture of the area from a unique perspective.

Start by meeting a Republican ex-political prisoner for a guided walk along the infamous Falls Road. See visible signs of the community's desire to be part of an Irish Republic.

Then, pass through the electronically-controlled gates to the predominately Protestant area of Shankill Road, where you will meet with either a Loyalist ex-political prisoner or an ex-member of the security forces who is from the area. Investigate the determination of the locals who wish to remain part of the United Kingdom.

For more than 30 years, The Troubles have had a powerful impact on the city and its residents. Very few people were unaffected by the violence, and everyone has a tale to tell. Investigate the real stories beyond the history books with first-hand accounts from those intimately involved.

Explore the world’s largest, outdoor art gallery as you examine the many murals, and get the opportunity to sign the Peace Wall and leave your thoughts alongside those of Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama.

The Irish guide was excellent and clear to understand. This is a tough history and while he was telling it from his point of view he did not seem to have an agenda, nor did he seem to hold animus toward the "other side". The British guide was hard to understand as he did not project his voice, and he was really, really, angry. That he still hated the Irish was more than evident.

Having both perspectives of the history and current situation in Belfast was invaluable. My only suggestion is that the two guides should join the other side’s tour at least once (they said they had not). I was expecting a spirit of reconciliation on the tour, but was left feeling hopeless.

I am only docking 1 star because the guide on the Shankill side was very sectarian and incredibly rude. Rather than simply share a perspective and then talk about moving forward as a shared society (like the guide on the Falls Road side) this guide made the group uncomfortable with his continuous reference to graphic child murders and equating Sinn Féin to the IRA. He also talked at length that the USA stands ready for a fight, with weapons and soldiers growing by the day. It felt very in appropriate and we didn't learn a whole lot about the actual area and lives of Shankill road people. There's a balance to highlighting the horrors of the Troubles but also not demonising entire communities. Very disappointed with the second half of the tour.
