Spend a beautiful day at the emerald waters of Königssee in the Berchtesgaden Alps of Bavaria. Departing Munich, you will drive along the most scenic German Alpine road into the marvelous valley of Berchtesgaden. Arrive at Königssee and take a boat ride to the peninsula. As you cruise, listen out for the mysterious echo of Königssee, created by the proximity of the sheer rock walls. You will also see the historic Eagle`s Nest viewpoint, a teahouse that was offered to Hitler on his 50th birthday. Look out too for the so-called Sleeping Witch silhouettes in the mountains. Back on dry land, visit the chapel of St. Bartholoma, dating from 1134 and located at the foot of Germany’s second highest mountain, the 8,900-foot (2,700-meter) high Watzmann. Walk to the final station at Salet, where a footpath leads to Lake Obersee. Enjoy the marvelous views of Germany´s highest waterfall at Röthbachfall. Return to Munich for a hotel drop-off. The entire length of this journey into a serene wilderness is 8-10 hours.

Take a full-day tour from Munich to Hitler’s mountain retreat, located in the mountains above Berchtesgaden. Presented to him in 1939 as a 50th birthday present, the mountain chalet took 13 months to complete and includes an elevator bored through a tunnel in the rocks to reach the entrance. You will depart from Munich and drive along some of the most scenic roads in the German Alps. On arrival, a special bus will take you up to the Eagle´s Nest entrance area, where you will ride the elevator to the mountain peak, and into Eagle´s Nest itself. Look at beautiful views over the Alps, with free time on your own to explore. The lower rooms can be visited with an English-speaking guide, and offer views of the building's past through plate-glass windows. Graffiti left by Allied troops is clearly visible in the surrounding woodwork. A large fireplace in the restaurant shows severe damage along its lower edges, where soldiers have smashed off small shards of marble as souvenirs. Hitler's small study is now used as a store room for the cafeteria. After the tour, you will get more free time to go to the NS-Documentation-Center in Berchtesgaden, before the drive back to Munich.

The enormous success of The Sound of Music Broadway Musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein premiering in 1959 caused film director Robert Wise and 250 crew members to turn Salzburg and its surroundings into the Sound of Music film location in 1964.   Right after release, the film became a tremendous success, awarded with 5 Oscars, becoming the highest grossing movie ever and reaching cult status over the years. Both the musical and film are based on the "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" written by Maria von Trapp in 1949.  Do follow the traces of the Trapp family and take a tour through Salzburg and its surroundings. Disembark the bus here and walk through the 406 foot (124 meters) tunnel to the original WWII brass elevator up to the Eagle’s Nest. Feel the palpable sense of history as the elevator carries you a further 406 feet (124 meters) through the heart of the Kehlstein mountain and straight into Hitler’s former lair. Descend from the Obersalzberg toward the mountain town of Berchtesgaden. See the fortress-like system of underground bunker complexes that were built by the Nazis to be used as air-raid shelters, a military headquarters, and a possible last refuge for the Third Reich leaders. Berchtesgaden holds so much historical value with regards to World War II. During the Third Reich the Obersalzberg was the Southern Headquarters for the National Socialist Party, with many top leaders owning homes on the mountain, and where many important political decisions were made. This private tour is perfect for those wishing to discover this history... This half day tour covers the famous Eagle's Nest and many of the other historically important sites on the Obersalzberg, including the more hidden locations that most tourists never hear about. While there are many tour options that include this area, most will only stop off at the most well known spots. This tour also includes the secrets hidden on the mountain which really provide an authentic account of the fascinating history of this area. In addition, the mountain scenery is extremely beautiful and on a clear day you will be surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps and the valley below, particularly from the Eagle's Nest. If not, the meeting point is the convenient and centrally located Berchtesgaden train and bus station. - We begin with a driving tour of the Obersalzberg mountainside with detailed historical commentary throughout. - Visit on foot into the woods to the lesser-known ruins of Hitler's Berghof home, including the opportunity to experience the panoramic views that were once on offer from his very house. - Next comes the opportunity to explore some of the original bunkers that made up the extensive bunker system below the National Socialist complex on the Obersalzberg mountainside. - The highlight is a visit to the famous Eagle's Nest perched atop the Kehlstein mountain at 6, 017ft. Exploring the fascinating history of Hitler's teahouse including the original features, such as the huge marble fireplace and the famous brass elevator. - Exploration of more hidden locations. Having lived directly on the Obersalzberg for many years I can show you some of the more hidden secret areas. - Time to ask any questions you may have. Alternatively if you would like to be dropped off in Berchtesgaden old town to look around, or at one of the other popular tourist attractions in Berchtesgaden that would also be no problem. Please note: The Eagle's Nest is only open May - October, depending on weather. If visiting November - April: Although not being able to visit the Eagle's Nest building itself, an in-depth historical account of the Eagle's Nest, using period photos to explain the historical significance of the building is included in this tour. Additionally, there will be an extended driving tour of Berchtesgaden to stop off at other WWII historical sites along the way.

Drive from Salzburg crossing the German border while enjoying great views. Pass Salzburg, cross the German border and continue into the Alps. Stop in Obersalzberg and switch to a reserved bus that will take you on a spectacular 6.5-kilometer drive along a spectacular single-lane road. The road was blasted out of solid rock with a 22% gradient that leads up to the Eagle's Nest (1,820 meters). To reach Hitler’s former residence, enter a 124-meter-long tunnel into the mountain. Climb aboard a golden brass elevator to ascend another 124 meters into the building itself.
