  • Reykjavík: Half-Day Guided Hike of Fagradalsfjall Volcano

    2. Reykjavík: Half-Day Guided Hike of Fagradalsfjall Volcano

Enjoy an afternoon or evening hike in Geldingadalur Valley, where lava flows from erupting volcanoes, to witness the Fagradalsfjall Volcano. Learn the history of the volcanoes of the area from your expert guide. Get picked up in Reykjavík and set out on a scenic drive surrounded by breathtaking views towards the Fagradalsfjall Volcano and Geldingadallur Valley. The Fagradalsfjall Volcano is erupting for the first time in 7,000 years. Once at the valley, put on your hiking gear and head towards the volcano to hopefully see some live lava flowing. Bring snacks along with you and enjoy them while you watch the spectacular natural show. Afterward, as you drive along the peninsula, your guide will fill you in on the history of volcanos in the area — many long-dormant, now covered by soft green lava moss.

Our guide Boje and driver Sentri (probably not the correct spelling) we’re fun and informative and kept everyone safe on this trip. Sadly the weather was horrendous but that’s nature. We saw some smouldering lava and could feel the heat, sadly nothing else. It gives us a reason to come back.

  • Reykjavik: Active Volcano Hike

    3. Reykjavik: Active Volcano Hike

Get picked up in Reykjavík and set off for the experience of a lifetime, as you hike to a volcanic eruption at Geldingadalur. Head for the volcanic eruption at the Reykjanes Peninsula – where the first volcanic activity in the area for about 800 years is happening. The lava slowly coming up to the surface gives you a chance to experience this amazing natural wonder from a close distance. Our guide will hike up to the volcano with you and tell you all you need to know about the new Fagradalsfjall volcano. The hike is about 1.5-2 hours and has a moderate level of difficulty. Once you arrive, you'll get the chance to see the hot flowing lava of the volcanic eruption. We'll hike around the Fagradalsfjall volcano until we find the best location to sit and enjoy the view, before heading back down.

Enjoyed the trip overall. The guide led the group of 17 people and waited when the group separated due to slower hikers. But when slow people caught up, he started hiking again so slower walkers did not get a break. Luckily that was only a few people. Loved the treat when we got to the top!!!

This was a fantastic tour. You spend a lot of time on the road but you get to see so much in just one day. The landscapes are awe-inspiring as are the tales that accompany them. Peter, the guide, told us histories, myths, and legends along the way. Mount Kirkjufell is breathtaking. My best photos of the trip came from this place.

After a slow 10-minute descent, to ensure the safety of passengers and provide ample opportunities to experience the amazing views, spend up to an hour inside the volcan...

Inside the vulcano was beautiful and very special! The colors are amazing!! I really liked it! It was very nice. The hike to the vulcano was long and extremely cold because of the weather. When we arrived there was no time too warm up. We had to go in a hurry inside the vulcano and when we were inside we had only 25 minutes to enjoy the surrounding. For me this was too much in a hurry and too short for the value of money. But despite all that the experience was really amazing!

What people are saying about Capital Region of Iceland

Our guide BG was amazing. You're lucky if you get him! He was full of cheeky, witty jokes, and he is extremely knowledgeable and insightful. To be honest, I was feeling under the weather. Everyone else in the trip was pretty hyped about everything and so BG was keeping up with their energy. But when he spoke to me, he matched my energy, and treated me kindly with respect. What a great guy! The trip itself was amazing too. We got very wet at the locations, from waterfalls to the black beach. So be prepared for that! It was truly awesome and inspiring. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed this unique Icelandic experience. I was picked up on time, and then taken to the site which is quite close to central Reykjavik. The horses were gentle, the landscape spectacular, and I felt quite comfortable despite never haven ridden. I’d recommend this.
