Booking tickets online was extremely easy. My brother and I had a little difficulty with the parking instructions, but once we figured out where the parking garage was located, we were good to go. The ferry departed on time, and the crew was friendly and helpful. There was indoor and outdoor seating. We saw bottlenose dolphins on the return trip which was fun. Plus we saw active dredging of the shipping channel, tugboats at work and the USS Yorktown with aircraft on its deck. The ride to the fort was smooth, and the ranger talk was chock full of historic information. It was cold, raw and rainy the day we visited so we were glad the time on the island was not too long. We had all the time we needed to explore, and it was great that a park ranger approached of his own volition to engage us in further discussion. We learned even more. Overall, it was wonderful despite the weather.

Taking this tour on our first day in Charleston was probably the best decision we made on our visit. Charleston is a town seen best by walking... BUT I highly recommend this tour to get the lay of the land as well as learn about it so you can know the “why” of what you’re seeing before you start exploring. Our guide, Nick, gave us a thorough tour of the city while delivering an excellent history as well as providing us with tips and hints for getting around as well as things to see and do; we often found ourselves referring back to what we learned from Nick as we continued to enjoy our weekend.

Simms was a great guide, he definitely made things fun. I think the tour is way too short, but it was fun to learn the history of the prison. Honestly didn’t think it was creepy enough, I’m open to spirit and didn’t feel too much energy other than in the iron room and basement. If you’re a history buff do this, it’s a great history.

Our guide Jack was great! He was a good story teller. It was fun, creepy and interesting all at the same time. Would recommend for an after dark activity if you like being spooked.

Captain Bryan was terrific in explaining the history of Shem Creek while we dined on an assortment of appetizers. I would highly recommend this tour.
