Why just view Ian Brodie's fine book (2004, 2011) on the filming locations of LOR - when you can immerse yourself in a wonderful full day tour from Christchurch? Mark was a very knowledgeable guide, providing not only photos and props but also a great wealth of information on New Zealand and its physical, biological, and botanical history - and importantly its social and cultural history. The weather was great (and not windy, quite unusual apparently) and we enjoyed our 14 seater 6 wheel drive vehicle to Mt Potts station , and subsequently our 200m walk to the peak of Mt Sunday - home to King Theoden's (golden) hall. (Yes, apparently gold leaf was used in crafting the temporary set). Attempts were made by my fellow travellers to wield The Sword, but I contented myself with carrying Sting back from the summit to our vehicle parked at the base. It did not glow blue - to my relief. Helm's Deep was identified, across the plain/'river'; and the snow retreating from the mountain caps. Yes!
Being a lord of the ring fan - This is a MUST ! Our guide, Christ (with a K) came to our hotel to pick us up. He is a die hard fan of lord of the ring. He shared the experiences, stories & details of the filming of lord of the ring even showed some behind the scenes of the filming. This recapped my memories of the movie. When we arrived, we trekked to the top which will take about 10-15mins (beware of cow dung & rabbit holes). Steps were steep but manageable. Beautiful view from the top ! With props, the pictures looks stunning. Recommended tour for fans like me !
It was Awesome. I enjoy the breathtaking scenery. It is a must do for those who is going to visit Christchurch. Our tour guide, Mark, was impressive. He told us everything about the set of LOTR. Overall, Wownderful..
Excellent day out with a great guide (Maria) who made the experience more enjoyable with her knowledge and enthusiasm. I would recommend this trip whether you’re a lord of the rings fan or not
Very cool tour! We had a awesome guide who actually did the sound on the set for LOTR and he told us some "Inside stories". Edoras is a beautiful place even without the actual buildings!
