Full description
Join your knowledgeable local guide for a leisurely 2-hour walking tour of the center portion of downtown Gettysburg, which was the heartbeat of the city in 1863. Examine the accounts of several of the city's civilians that lived in the same areas you will be walking through. Hear stories of the residents, who were reluctant witnesses to the Battle of Gettysburg. The war didn't happen just on the battlefield as you will come to find out. Travel back in time and learn about the existing structures and what the town looked like in 1863. Although you've learned about the Battle of Gettysburg in history class, on this tour you will hear, described in detail, how the events actually unfolded in July of 1863 and how the local residents remembered them. This tour is their story, about life in the middle of an urban battlefield.

Our tour guide Kenneth Rich was fantastic! Extremely knowledgeable and very interesting. He's a true historian and you can tell how much he enjoys his research and factual details. One of the best tour guides I've ever had. I highly recommend Ken and look forward to returning to Gettysburg and attending more of his guided tours.

This was one of the best walking tours I have been on. Our guide took on the persona of a historic character who, as a child, had been there when the Confederate troops first showed up in Gettysburg on their way north toward Harrisburg. His tour was geared primarily toward how the troupe movements and fighting affected the local people of the town. As you walked around, you were introduced to characters as you stood in front of their home or business locations as of July 1-4, 1863. He was so good that his narration brought several of our small group to tears at times from the emotions that he was able to elicit. And, since nobody in our group had any pressing plans, our 2-hour tour lasted 3 1/2 hours. AMAZING!

My tour guide was a gentleman by the name of Jeff and I have to say he was absolutely phenomenal. This was our first guided tour of the town for our trip, so we didn't have too much previous knowledge of the town going into it. Jeff was a wealth of knowledge, he did a fantastic job of painting a picture for us of the people who lived in the town at the time of the battle of Gettysburg and what their day to day life was like. He was so incredibly thorough in describing the significance of certain buildings and at the conclusion of the tour gave us wonderful recommendations of museums and other exhibits to check out during our trip. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with this tour guide, I would recommend this tour to anyone looking to know more about the people of Gettysburg and their lives during that trying time.
