From Venice: Murano & Burano Guided Tour by Private Boat

1. From Venice: Murano & Burano Guided Tour by Private Boat

Escape the crowds of central Venice and catch a glimpse of what life in the city used to be like, as an island of artisans famous for their traditional craft skills, passed down from generation to generation. Your guide will keep you entertained on the short boat ride to the small island of Murano, famous for its glass making traditions. Find out the facinating story of Murano glassblowers and how their skills were so valued they were banned from leaving Venice on the threat of execution. Watch a craftsman in action and listen to a description of the process in English. Learn how silica sand becomes glass, and how the glass is given color. Afterwards, there will be time to browse the huge collection of glass art, and wander the island on your own. Cruise to the tiny island of Burano to see the brightly-painted houses huddled tightly together along streets and canals. Uncover Burano’s centuries-old lacemaking tradition as you visit a building where women still partake in this tradition of stitching lace. Your guide will explain the process of this dying art. Then, you can follow in the footsteps of Michelangelo and pick out your own keepsake. Or, wander the winding streets, sampling delicious cookies at local bakeries. Unlike other tours, this excursion intentionally omits Torcello to provide you with more time on Murano and Burano, and with less time on the boat or trekking inland.

Ellegi Murano Glass: The Art of Tradition

6. Ellegi Murano Glass: The Art of Tradition

Why to visit the Ellegi Murano glass factory once you are in Venice? This is a family run factory, opened about 600 years ago and still it's based on a tradition that goes from generation to generation, since there are no schools to learn this. Easy to reach because the factory is just a few steps away from the main boat stop Faro and from the most important attractions of the island like the Glass Museum and the Basilica of Santa Maria e San Donato, or by a private taxi since they have their own private boat pier. No architectural barries make the access smooth for everybody. In the same area you can visit either the glass factory and the original shop where you can buy their own handmade products. Kids until 15 years old are for free, we welcome your pets! The strong point of our glass factory are the demonstrations relating to glass processing techniques, not just any glass, here you can admire the production of artistic glassware! And here is our furnace! An experence that lasts 20 minutes but that remains in the memory forever! A unique opportunity not to be missed! The glass is extracted at high temperatures and shaped before the wide-eyed visitors. Young and old alike cannot help but be enchanted to see the hot blown or molded glass. Each of the two techniques used is explained in great detail by our speaker, in the language required for the tour.

What people are saying about Glass Museum

Elen was an exceptional tour guide for our Murano and Burano excursion. Her knowledge and enthusiasm truly enriched our experience. The only downside was wishing we had more time to explore Burano, but overall, it was a fantastic trip thanks to Elen's guidance.

The tour was fine if you have enough time to spare..just bare in mind that the boat transfer will eat about 45 mins to 1 hour for the entire tour, start to finish both murano and burano islands then back to drop off point

Great tour and our guide Aleksander was absolutely great. Really knowledgeable and spent time with everyone.
