Spend the day in the lovely landscapes of Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake on a full-day tour of Lake Balaton. Depart Budapest and travel by air-conditioned coach to the small town of Balatonfüred. Located on the north shore of Lake Balaton, the town’s highlights include as sightseeing trip by “nostalgia train.” Next, take a 1-hour cruise on Lake Balaton, before some free time to take a stroll along the picturesque promenade and enjoy some lunch (own expense). Drive to the Tihany Peninsula to see why it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is rich with architecture and vineyards that produce the local wine. Get a unique view of Lake Balaton before going to the Abbey of Tihany, founded in 1055 by the Hungarian King András. Transfer back to Budapest for a drop off at your hotel and the end of the tour services.

Not a lot of time to visit places

Once we got there....a good drive with the bus to get there....we did not have a lot of time to visit places. Took already half an hour to go to the bathroom before moving on a half an hour later. Our guide Hélèn was not always that nice.....people asked questions and she just ignored them. She has an annoying voice to listen to, does not speak clear English so it is not easy to understand her. We also had her as a guide on the RiverRide Bus.....lucky us !!! Having a good guide is very important....it makes or break your tour. It is a very beautiful area but to make it as a daytrip is not enough time. Better to go there by car and ride around for a few days. Thats is really worth it. Also make sure you have CASH with you. You can not pay there with your card....not even in a restaurant. One little shop we had to leave without buying something and when the owner of the shop saw that, she pulled a little bank machine card out. They want cash...so they do not pay taxes....very obvious.

Worth the tour

Tour was worth doing. Really enjoyed seeing Thiany and Lake Balaton. Our guide (Helena?) was lovely and very knowledgeable. Boat ride was nice and relaxing and a good way to see Thiany from the lake. Train ride was informative but wasnt necessary. The only negative was the organisation of pick up which is included as part of the tour. We waited for half an hour in our hotel lobby to be picked up and had to call to find out what was happening. A taxi arrived to pick us up eventually to take us to the bus. Would have preferred to have been told a meeting point rather then hotel pick up as it would have been quicker for us to walk to the bus. We also were delayed and had to wait for two people due to their pick up schedule being delayed. We didnt leave until around 9.45am after which we had been waiting on the bus for 45minutes.

Good trip that could have been better organised

We were 35 minutes late being picked up from our hotel. We were not told what was happening and thought we had been forgotten. When we finally got to the minibus the only seats left were right at the back with very little view of the countryside. That wouldn't have been so bad but for the fact that we could not hear anything the guide was saying. We asked her if she could speak a little louder at the first stop but this did not happen. Apart from this it was a good trip to see a different part of Hungary.
