Full description
You will begin your tour from Piazetta Pascoli, from where you will be able to take in incredible views of the Sassi di Matera. You will then follow your knowledgeable English-speaking guide through the narrow streets of the ancient city, down stairways and alleys that will bring you to the heart of Sasso Caveoso. It’s here that you will visit the church of San Pietro Caveoso, complete with its Baroque bell tower. You will then visit Rupestrian churches, such as the Church of Santa Maria di Idris or the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve, and admire the perfectly preserved frescoes which date back 1,000 years. A must-see whilst taking this tour is the characteristic Casa Grotta, which is a typical Matera house dug out of the rock. Your tour will eventually end in the Baroque area of the city, where you can take in the beauty of both the Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare churches. From the scenic point in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, you will be free to enjoy the view of Sasso Barisano and the Romanesque Cathedral. Along the way you will unravel secrets about this extraordinary city, and discover why it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1993, and chosen by both Passolini and Mel Gibson as a filming location for their movies.

Perfect for us

We decided at short notice to take the comparatively long journey from Sorrento (3.5 h / route) by rental car and to visit Matera. We had planned about three to four hours on site, during which we did not want to wander around senselessly. So the two-hour tour booked through get your guide. In addition to us, two other people took part. Small group in the truest sense of the word. Everything went perfectly, the guide was very nice and competent. This two-hour tour gave us a very good overview of the city and its history, so that we drove back to Sorrento with a very good feeling.

Good English speaking guide Francesca, seen and heard a lot; walked straight through the sassi! Also cave house may visit with good explanation there. Church on a hill visited with beautiful frescoes. Despite the heat doing fine, end of day preference like us. Tempo was certainly not too high. Good shoes are important because the stairs are often slippery;) if you are there for a day and possibly sleeping, this is the best way to know a lot in a short time. You would not come to certain places yourself ... but just follow the hordes of tourists who are here and there. Recommended!!!
