Languedoc: Tour and Tasting at Domaine de Baronarques
- Small group
- Valid: 1 day
Come along on this tour and learn all about the history of this fascinating city. Enter through the main entrance, known as Porte Narbonnaise, to the medieval city. Learn about the fortifications built by the Romans. Cross the main street, Rue Cross Mayrevieille to the castle. Discover the museum inside the castle and develop a better understanding of the Trencavel family that defended the Cathars during the Albigensian Crusade. Walk along the top of the wall, crossing both medieval and Roman towers as you head towards the church. Hear an explanation (in English, French or Italian) about the architecture of the Gothic church and see the beautiful stained glass windows, built between the 13th and 16th centuries. Walk through the streets of the ancient religious quarter and learn about the inquisition in Carcassonne and Toulouse.
Dive into centuries of winemaking tradition with a tour of the Domaine de Baronaques. Acquired by the Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her 2 sons in 1998, the vineyard has been in existence since the 17th century, when it was under the possession of the Abbey de Saint-Polycarpe. Across over 270 acres of lush vineyards, experience the raw materials that coalesce to form a wine celebrated across the globe. After arrival at the vineyard, you'll tour the vast vineyard lands, the vat-house and barrel-room where wines are fermented and aged, as well as the 19th-century French Château, nestled into a tree-covered hill. After a full tour of the premises, you'll have the opportunity to taste the 3 wines produced at the Domaine de Baronaques: Grand Vin Rouge, La Capitelle de Baronarques and Grand Vin Blanc.

Our cards were ready for us to collect when we went to the Tourist Office. However, had we known in advance, we could probably have collected them from our hotel. Despite having an empty box to request where the pass could be collected, no 'suggestions' were forthcoming. I was advised that I could not collect them from the airport when I entered that in the box. Detailing planning of visits sometimes required to prevent disappointment on Mondays when some museums are shut. The use of the card, albeit we had a Premium, alleviated any necessity to search for cash or credit cards when hopping on and off public transport or entering attractions.

A very nice way to explore the city. Some directions are (at least in translation) somewhat confusing, and at least one of our clues/locations was out of business, so the tour might benefit from a little update, but we had a lot of fun, and would definitely recommend!

We were spoiled by having two charming and most knowledgeable guides, John (American) and Yannick (French), both anglophone and francophone. The electric bikes were brand new, really comfortable and so easy to ride. John took us to many different parts of the city and mesmerized us with historical facts and folklore. The activity consists of a tour of the vineyards and the winery, where we learn a little about its history. Then, we tasted 3 wines: a white and two reds. When booking the language options were French or English, but when we arrived at the winery one of the hostesses spoke in Spanish, so we could choose that language :) The place is incredible and the attention is excellent. It lasted approx. 40 'and we pay € 10 per person. It was a wonderful experience. We highly recommend !!
Very enriching walk on Camargue culture and full of surprises ... Small gourmet break also very popular. I recommend the Martial guide who is unbeatable and full of humor and he shares his local culture with you with passion and sympathy. If he comes to Brittany we will pay him a visit in our turn unless we decide to stay in the area we will meet him with pleasure on his secret beach!
An original way to discover the city and look up to its treasures that we might not see otherwise. Be careful, the puzzles are sometimes a little complicated ... But that adds spice to the walk
