Carcassonne: Castle and Ramparts Skip-the-Line Ticket

1. Carcassonne: Castle and Ramparts Skip-the-Line Ticket

Carcassonne was settled as early as the 6th century BC and later became an important Roman town. It was fortified in the 4th century and was a strategic site in the Middle Ages. It took on its definitive shape in the 13th century with the king’s decision to construct the distinctive double-walled ramparts and extend the castle. The city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is a testimony to 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,500 years of history. Left in ruins after the the Cathar Crusade (1209-1229), the Inquisition and exile of the Trencavel family, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was commissioned by the French state in 1844 to restore the city of Cathar. Completed in 1911 under the direction of his pupil Paul Boeswillwald, the royal city was returned to its original splendor, finally being inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1997. In a new, self-guided addition to this tour, guests are invited to see the magnificent views from the medieval western ramparts.

We really enjoyed this trip and Bertrand is a fantastic host! He was very knowledgeable about the production of the wines in the region and took the time to explain everything. We visited two wineries and then Bertrand’s mother made us a delicious lunch which we enjoyed with some wine in her home. On the way back to Montpellier we were shown around a beautiful medieval village. A fantastic day which we would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Montpellier!

Bertrand was terrific! Lots of good information about Languedoc and Pic St Loup wines in particular. He was precisely on time, meeting point was easy to find, and we had a great time with the other people on the tour. Dinner was fantastic and the wine was superb. I would highly recommend this tour!

It's worth it, you don't have to queue, you enter directly and the visit to the castle is the most beautiful part of the citadel in my opinion. Important: those under 26 years of age have free admission.

Bertrand is an excellent, friendly guide who really understands the region and the wines produced here. He and his wife were wonderful hosts and served a beautiful lunch. We highly recommend this tour!

Interesting visit. Friendly guide. Gourmet break in a wine estate. Even for an 8 year old child the 3h30 visit was not too long. Do not hesitate.
