What people are saying about Reykjavik
Spectacular experience and well worth every penny. We did the 5.5 hr hike which allows you to go higher up on the glacier. When you arrive, follow signs for visit parking. Follow the path to the tee- meeting point is to left and visitor center to right. Our tour guide was amazing and worked very hard to make our experience what it was. The tour company provides crampons, a harness, an ice pick, and a helmet. More than likely you’ll need to rent their boots. It was about 700isk per pair. The sole of your boots have to be stiff enough to keep the crampons from falling off, so they inspect your boots in the beginning and let you know if you need to rent or not. The views were incredible. You’re hiking for probably every bit of almost five hours. You stop along the way for photos. Bring snacks and water. If the weather is nice, you’ll likely get warm once you start hiking and want to ditch layers, so having a bookbag for that is good. Can not recommend enough. This is a must do for sure!
It is totally advisable to carry out this activity since it is the largest man-made ice cave in the world. That without forgetting that the cave is in a glacier and that when you see it from inside you can see many details accompanied by the explanations of the guide. To get to the glacier there is a meeting point and the journey is made by bus and then a kind of truck that transports you to the glacier (these two transports are included in the price of the activity). It is advisable to bring complete waterproof clothing, although if you do not have any, they will leave you there (even very practical waterproof shoe covers).
The hike was absolutely awesome. Our guide was experienced and professional. He led us well up the icefall in a manner that was efficient and fun. The hike was challenging but we stopped at appropriate times and the guide made sure we were all comfortable before moving forward. I would highly recommend this hike. The glacier is getting smaller by the year and this hike may eventually not be possible.
We had a great time! Hjortur (or adventure Jim as we call him) was amazing! Very knowledgeable and fun guide. Highly recommend him!
An amazing experience! Our guide, Max was simply the best. This was our most favorite adventure while in Iceland. Highly recommend!
