Full description
Experience a romantic sightseeing tour by bus and boat from Vienna, introducing you to the beauty of the Wachau and Danube Valleys. One of the most prominent tourist destinations in Lower Austria, the Wachau Valley is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architectural and agricultural history, and it also attracts epicureans with its food and wine. You will explore the River Danube as it flows around picturesque villages and steep vineyards. The many ancient castles testify to the former importance of the river as a trade and traffic route. One of these is the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, where, according to legend, Richard the Lionheart was kept imprisoned, and was eventually freed by his faithful minstrel Blondel. You will take a romantic boat trip along the legendary Danube and go to the heart of the Wachau wine-growing region at the old city of Krems. A highlight of the tour will be a visit to the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, one of Austria's most famous Baroque buildings, and winner of the award for "Best Historic Destination of the World" in 2008. There will be the possibility to stop at the Abbey Restaurant for lunch, and during the winter season, when the boat cruise is unavailable, this will be replaced with lunch in Melk.
Includes
  • Round-trip Bus tour from Vienna to Danube Valley
  • Boat trip on the Danube (in summer only, in winter a lunch will be offered instead)

Everything was nice, Dürnstein city was beautiful. Our guide Thomas was really knowledgeable. The boat trip was less pleasent than I had in mind. It was so warm and not many seats were available on the deck. The Melk Abbey was really nice and everything was very well explained by outmr local guid. In general I had a nice experience and I am satisfied.

I’m so glad we joined this tour and get to see the lovely Wachau Valley and other attractions like the picturesque, quiet towns of Krems, Durnstein & Melk. The schedule was on time and just right for us. Thomas, our guide did a wonderful job in explaining Austrian history from tue context of the monarchy to religion and everything else in between. My husband and I had a great time.

Our guide, Erik, did an amazing job of leading this tour. Although the weather did not fully cooperate, the day was one of our best in Vienna. The bus tour to Krems and Spitz, with commentary of Austrian history was interesting, and the boat ride from Spitz to Melk was enjoyable. The Melk Abbey is a beautiful old building with much history which the guide tried to impart. The language was an issue at times. Overall a very worthwhile day trip.
