From Bangkok: Amphawa Floating Markets and Firefly Boat Tour

1. From Bangkok: Amphawa Floating Markets and Firefly Boat Tour

The markets of Thailand are some of the country’s most quintessential experiences; they give you a lively peek inside the more traditional culture of a country that often lives by water (or in this case, by the railroad tracks as well). On this full-day guided tour, you'll be taken to the most iconic markets on the outskirts of Bangkok, ending with a relaxing firefly boat tour to wind down from the day’s excitement. Maeklong Train Market is a fresh market situated right by a well-worn railroad. Watch the vendors expertly close and open their awnings to make room as the trains pass by. Wat Bang Kung is a striking Buddhist temple engulfed by the roots of a massive Banyan Tree. Learn about its bloody battle history and see the Golden Buddha inside. Located on the Amphawa canal, the Amphawa Floating Market is one of Thailand's more popular floating markets. Visit this riverside market and see vendors selling delicious treats like sweets and seafood, or browse some of the shophouses and restaurants. After sunset, when the lights have dimmed, you'll wind down with a relaxing river cruise. Your boat will take you a little further out where it is dark enough to see the fireflies, before heading back to your accommodations at 9:00 PM, ending a day of simple pleasures and tastes with the comforting sight of these lightning bugs.

Bangkok: Private Tour to Thaka Floating Market

2. Bangkok: Private Tour to Thaka Floating Market

Start your trip from your accommodation in Bangkok and depart to Samut Songkhram on a day trip. Thaka Floating Market will give you a truly authentic experience! Here, the locals' way of life is still very much preserved. Glide through the water on a wooden rowboat while seeing vendors' paddle boats piled with fragrant lotus blossoms, coconuts and handicrafts, selling their wares in a palm-lined canal. Absorb the local scene and learn about the tradition of water commuting. Afterwards, visit an authentic Thai house and see how the locals make brown coconut sugar. Then, take a visit to Wat Bang Kung, once a navy campsite during the reign of King Taksin the Great. Following the second defeat of the Ayutthaya kingdom in 1767, the king relocated his navy to this campsite. The temple is honored as one of the unseen temples of Thailand. After an enjoyable day, transfer back to your hotel in Bangkok.

Kanchanaburi: Sightseeing Tour with Amphawa Market

3. Kanchanaburi: Sightseeing Tour with Amphawa Market

After pickup, the first stop is the Bridge On The River Kwai, part of the Siam-Burma Railway built by WWII prisoners of war. Walk along the “Death Railway” bridge of Hollywood fame, learning about its historical and cultural significance. Next, head to Wat Tham Seua, a Buddhist temple perched atop a mountain. Known as the Tiger Cave Temple, it was named after the tiger paw prints found on the cave walls. Climb to the top and take in the gorgeous scenery, marvel at the large gleaming statue of Buddha, and explore the main temple area. The next stop is Wat Bang Kung. Built during the Ayutthaya period, this Buddhist temple is covered in the roots and branches of nearby Banyan trees, making it seem like a hidden ruin in the forest. Take a peek at the golden Buddha statue inside and snap photos of the iconic entrance. Finally, make your way to the Amphawa Floating Market. Board a boat and cruise down the river as you interact with vendors paddling on their small boats loaded with produce. Soak up the sights of the river, shop for some souvenirs, or buy passing street food to eat on the trip back to Kanchanaburi.
